First PS Plus Essential Game for August 2026 Unveiled: 'Big Walk' Heads an Exciting Lineup

As the summer gaming period intensifies, PlayStation Plus members are already buzzing with thrilling news about August's selection. Sony has confirmed the inaugural free title for the PS Plus Essential collection in August 2026, and it marks a day-one launch that has been generating a lot of excitement since its reveal earlier this year.

Big Walk: The Star Attraction

The announced game is Big Walk, a collaborative multiplayer escapade crafted by House House and distributed by Panic. House House is the renowned indie studio behind the cherished Untitled Goose Game and Push Me Pull You, recognized for their quirky, comedic, and socially-driven gameplay experiences. With Big Walk, they are exploring a fresh genre they term a "friendslop”—games designed to flourish on hilarious social exchanges and the unforeseen chaos players create together.

A Day-One Release for All Subscribers

Big Walk will be accessible to all PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. Importantly, this is a day-one release, implying that the game will join the monthly lineup on the exact day it becomes available in stores, allowing players with an active membership to download it at no extra cost. This represents a significant shift for Sony, as day-one releases have typically been more prevalent on rival services like Xbox Game Pass. Nevertheless, Sony has been increasingly dedicated to this approach. In mid-May, Christian Svensson, Vice President of Third-Party Content Ventures and Strategic Initiatives at Sony Interactive Entertainment, disclosed that the company seeks to provide between four and six day-one launches through the subscription service annually, mainly spotlighting indie games and third-party titles. Big Walk aligns perfectly with this goal.

The game will launch in all regions simultaneously on the same date, adhering to a global release schedule for Essential monthly games instead of a staggered rollout.

What Is Big Walk About?

For those intrigued by the concept, Big Walk is described as a collaborative journey "about teamwork and communication". Players embark with friends through an expansive world filled with obstacles, puzzles, and treasures. The essence of the game lies in exploration, dialogue, and simply spending time together.

The game incorporates proximity voice chat, enabling players to converse naturally based on their physical closeness in the game environment. However, communication can sometimes be a challenge. Players will encounter moments of sudden silence and must discover new methods to interact using an array of tools and toys, such as walkie-talkies, laser pointers, binoculars, megaphones, flares, whiteboards, cowbells, and a giant golden head. It’s a game meant for cooperative multiplayer, designed to be played with a group of friends over multiple sessions.

Big Walk can be enjoyed with a single companion or with up to 12 players in a single session. It also supports cross-play, meaning PlayStation 5 users who claim the game through PlayStation Plus will be able to team up with friends on other platforms, including PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch 2.

The Announcement and What's Next

Sony first revealed during the February 2026 State of Play that Big Walk would launch on day one for PS Plus Essential, but no release timeframe was provided at that moment. That changed during the June 2026 Nintendo Direct, where it was officially confirmed that Big Walk would arrive on August 4 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

With this announcement, Big Walk becomes the first confirmed title for PS Plus Essential in August. The rest of the games are yet to be disclosed, but Sony is anticipated to make the entire lineup announcement on Wednesday, July 29. At least one AAA title is broadly expected to join the selection, though only time will reveal.

A Strong Start to August

The inclusion of Big Walk as a day-one release is already stirring positive excitement for the August lineup. It signifies Sony's ongoing commitment to provide value through its subscription service, especially during a period when video game prices are soaring. For enthusiasts of cooperative, social gaming experiences, Big Walk is set to be a distinctive and unforgettable adventure.

PlayStation Plus Essential represents the base tier of Sony's subscription gaming service, including online multiplayer access, a monthly variety of free PS4 and PS5 games, cloud storage, and discounts on PlayStation Store purchases. It is priced at $79.99 per year, $27.99 for a three-month subscription, or $10.99 monthly. Additionally, subscribers can still claim July's free PlayStation Plus Essential games—Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, For the King 2, and CrossCode—until August 3.

As the complete August lineup is revealed later this week, one thing is clear: PlayStation Plus subscribers have a highly anticipated day-one title to look forward to on August 4. Big Walk is poised to be an adventure worth taking.
