Why in 2022 we are going to see more foldable phones

After Samsung launched its Galaxy Fold in 2019, many companies attempted making moldable mobiles.

From 2019 onwards Samsung has launched a few flexing smartphones. Huawei and Motorola have both launched multiple; Xiaomi, Microsoft, Royole and Oppo have also launched foldable phones. 2022 could be the year when many more foldable phones will be launched.

Parts are getting cheaper

One of the major reasons that made people against foldable phones in the early days of the design was its price. The original Galaxy Fold sold for $1,980 / £1,900 / AU$2,900.

In 2021 for the first time, we saw an ‘affordable’ foldable phone though that may have a price of $999 / £949 / AU$1,499 Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 it is still a lot of money, but a lot less than the original Fold.

The price of Z Flip 3 is less not because it is smaller than the Fold, but the reason is that the technology is older, and makers have found ways to produce cheaper parts. And now we will be able to see low-cost foldable phones.

Not a novelty for Samsung

In the start when foldable phones launched, they were treated as novelties and were shown off with fanfare at special events just for them, happening at random times of the year, even if they were actually released months later or not at all.

But this is not the way consumer smartphones are launched. Generally, each new generation of smartphone in a family is launched at yearly intervals. Samsung Galaxy handsets are generally launched in the beginning of the year, every year, and iPhones come in the last few months of the.

Foldables launching irregularly show that, companies were not treating them as essential part of their mobile line-up. Rather, they were an enjoyable novelty that companies wanted people to buy, but not at the expense of sales of the brand’s actual mobile lineup.

In 2021, that changed when the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3 were unveiled both at the same time as a family of phones as a replacement for the Galaxy Note 21 devices. This shows that Samsung is treating its foldables more seriously as a phone you might consider buying.

Many more companies experimenting

For a long period of time Samsung, Huawei and Motorola were the only companies making foldable phones, and even they were not launching them regularly.

In 2021 we have seen debut efforts from Xiaomi and Oppo, as well as the second-gen models from Microsoft and Royole and the Oppo Find N, which fixes some biggest problems with competitors’ devices, like the lack of a noticeable screen crease.

In 2022 some more companies have promised to launch similar devices like TCL, Realme, Vivo, Google, Apple and more. Some of those expected mobiles might arrive later, and some brands might put out multiple models. For example, TCL might have multiple affordable devices, and the second Xiaomi Mix Fold is basically confirmed at this point.

Competition will encourage many brands to put out foldable. And, it will encourage companies to make worthy devices, instead of fragile or temperamental foldables.
